AND Satan stood up against Yashar'el, and provoked Daviyd to number Yashar'el.
And Daviyd said to Yo'av and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Yashar'el from Be'er Sheva even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.
And Yo'av answered, Yahuah make his people a hundred times so many more as they be: but, my adoniy the king, are they not all my adoniy's servants? why then does my adoniy require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Yashar'el?
Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Yo'av. Wherefore Yo'av departed, and went throughout all Yashar'el, and came to Yerushalayim.
And Yo'av gave the sum of the number of the people unto Daviyd. And all they of Yashar'el were a thousand thousand and a hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Yahudah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.
But Leviy and Binyamiyn counted he not among them: for the king's word was abominable to Yo'av.
And Elohiym was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Yashar'el.
And Daviyd said unto Elohiym, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech you, do away the iniquity of your servant; for I have done very foolishly.
And Yahuah spoke unto Gad, Daviyd's seer, saying,
Go and tell Daviyd, saying, Thus says Yahuah, I offer you three things: choose one of them, that I may do it unto you.
So Gad came to Daviyd, and said unto him, Thus says Yahuah, Choose you
Either three years' famine; or three months to be destroyed before your foes, while that the sword of your enemies overtakes you; or else three days the sword of Yahuah, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of Yahuah destroying throughout all the coasts of Yashar'el. Now therefore advise yourself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.
And Daviyd said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of Yahuah; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.
So Yahuah sent pestilence upon Yashar'el: and there fell of Yashar'el seventy thousand men.
And Elohiym sent an angel unto Yerushalayim to destroy it: and as he was destroying, Yahuah beheld, and he repented of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now your hand. And the angel of Yahuah stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Yevuciy.
And Daviyd lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of Yahuah stand between the earth and the heavens, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Yerushalayim. Then Daviyd and the elders of Yashar'el, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.
And Daviyd said unto Elohiym, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let your hand, I pray you, O Yahuah Elohai, be on me, and on my father's house; but not on your people, that they should be plagued.
Then the angel of Yahuah commanded Gad to say to Daviyd, that Daviyd should go up, and set up an altar unto Yahuah in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Yevuciy.
And Daviyd went up at the saying of Gad, which he spoke in the name of Yahuah.
And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.
And as Daviyd came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw Daviyd, and went out of the threshingfloor, and bowed himself to Daviyd with his face to the ground.
Then Daviyd said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto Yahuah: you shall grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.
And Ornan said unto Daviyd, Take it to you, and let my adoniy the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give you the oxen also for ascending smoke offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the oblation; I give it all.
And King Daviyd said to Ornan, Nay; but I will truly buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is yours for Yahuah, nor offer ascending smoke offerings without cost.
So Daviyd gave to Ornan for the place six hundred sheqels of gold by weight.
And Daviyd built there an altar unto Yahuah, and offered ascending smoke offerings and peace offerings, and called upon El-Yahuah; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of the ascending smoke offering.
And Yahuah commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.
At that time when Daviyd saw that Yahuah had answered him in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Yevuciy, then he sacrificed there.
For the Tabernacle of Yahuah, which Mosheh made in the wilderness, and the altar of the ascending smoke offering, were at that season in the high place at Giv'on.
But Daviyd could not go before it to inquire of Elohiym: for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of Yahuah.
