Chapter 1

1

NOW after the death of Yahusha it came to pass, that the children of Yashar'el asked Yahuah, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Kena`aniym first, to fight against them?

2

And Yahuah said, Yahudah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

3

And Yahudah said unto Shim`on his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Kena`aniym; and I likewise will go with you into your lot. So Shim`on went with him.

4

And Yahudah went up; and Yahuah delivered the Kena`aniym and the Perizziym into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezeq ten thousand men.

5

And they found Adoniy-Bezeq in Bezeq: and they fought against him, and they slew the Kena`aniym and the Perizziym.

6

But Adoniy-Bezeq fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

7

And Adoniy-Bezeq said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so Elohiym has requited me. And they brought him to Yerushalayim, and there he died.

8

Now the children of Yahudah had fought against Yerushalayim, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.

9

And afterward the children of Yahudah went down to fight against the Kena`aniym, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the Negev, and in the valley.

10

And Yahudah went against the Kena`aniym that dwelt in Chevron: (now the name of Chevron before was Qiryat Arba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Achiyman, and Talmai.

11

And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Deviyr: and the name of Deviyr before was Qiryat Cepher:

12

And Kalev said, He that smites Qiryat Cepher, and it, to him will I give Akcah my daughter to be his woman.

13

And Othniy'el the son of Qenaz, Kalev's younger brother, took it: and he gave him Akcah his daughter to be his woman.

14

And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Kalev said unto her, What will you?

15

And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for you have given me a south land; give me also את springs of water. And Kalev gave her את the upper springs and the nether springs.

16

And the children of the Qeyniy, Mosheh's father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Yahudah into the wilderness of Yahudah, which lies in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.

17

And Yahudah went with Shim`on his brother, and they slew the Kena`aniym that inhabited Tsephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Chormah.

18

Also Yahudah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Ashqelon with the coast thereof, and Eqron with the coast thereof.

19

And Yahuah was with Yahudah; and he drove out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

20

And they gave Chevron unto Kalev, as Mosheh said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anaq.

21

And the children of Binyamiyn did not drive out the Yevuciym that inhabited Yerushalayim; but the Yevuciym dwell with the children of Binyamiyn in Yerushalayim unto this day.

22

And the house of Yoceph, they also went up against Beyt-El: and Yahuah was with them.

23

And the house of Yoceph sent to descry Beyt-El. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)

24

And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Show us, we pray you, the entrance into the city, and we will show you mercy.

25

And when he showed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.

26

And the man went into the land of the Chittiym, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.

27

Neither did Menashsheh drive out the inhabitants of Beyt Sha'an and her towns, nor Ta`anak and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Do'r and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Yivle`am and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Kena`aniym would dwell in that land.

28

And it came to pass, when Yashar'el was strong, that they put the Kena`aniym to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.

29

Neither did Ephrayim drive out the Kena`aniym that dwelt in Gezer; but the Kena`aniym dwelt in Gezer among them.

30

Neither did Zevulun drive out the inhabitants of Qitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Kena`aniym dwelt among them, and became tributaries.

31

Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Akko, nor the inhabitants of Tsiydon, nor of Achlav, nor of Akziyv, nor of Chelbah, nor of Apheq, nor of Rechov:

32

But the Asheriym dwelt among the Kena`aniym, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.

33

Neither did Naphtaliy drive out the inhabitants of Beyt Shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beyt Anath; but he dwelt among the Kena`aniym, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beyt Shemesh and of Beyt Anath became tributaries unto them.

34

And the Emoriym forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley:

35

But the Emoriym would dwell in Mount Cherec in Ayalon, and in Sha`alabbiyn: yet the hand of the house of Yoceph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.

36

And the coast of the Emoriym was from the going up to Ma`aleh Aqrabbiym, from the rock, and upward.
